Crime, COVID and weight cutting caos – Fighter mugged and stabbed ahead of today’s fights.
Amidst a week of crime, COVID and weight cutting chaos, the final EFC event is about to take place and it is set to end the year off in spectacular fashion!
Controversy around main event athletes making weight has overshadowed the changes that COVID and crime has forced on the card.
Three bouts were cancelled just ahead of the weigh-in due to athletes testing positive and in a shocking story one athlete was forced to step out of his bout after being subject of a mugging and stabbing to the hand.
Martin Gcinumkhondo, who was set to face Lukhmaan Jhazbhay in a bantamweight bout at EFC 91 arrived at the weigh-ins with the injury received to the hand two days ago, but still wanting to go ahead with the fight. Against his protest to continue, after an assessment my the EFC medical team he was not cleared to compete.
The EFC team wish Martin a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back in the hexagon next year.
His opponent was re-matched against Gift Walker who’s initial bout was impacted due to COVID.
EFC 91 takes place live from the EFC Performance Institute in JHB today (Sat 4 Dec 2021) and can be watched from anywhere in the world on efcworldwide.tv
